About KS1 English
Our KS1 English section turns the National Curriculum into short, child-friendly quizzes that make learning fun and memorable. Each quiz has 10 carefully written questions with helpful hints, supporting children aged 5–7 (Years 1 and 2) as they build confidence with phonics, spelling, punctuation, grammar and early reading skills.
Great places to start include abbreviations in Abbreviations – Mr and Mrs, describing words in Adjectives, sentence basics in Capital Letters and Full Stops, and list punctuation in Commas for a List. Quizzes can be replayed for retrieval practice, helping key vocabulary and rules to stick.
The content here aligns with KS1 expectations and supports both classroom learning and home study. Regular, low-stakes practice encourages curiosity, builds accuracy and prepares pupils well for the Year 2 SATs and the step up to KS2.
See the official Government guidance: English programmes of study: key stages 1 and 2.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should my child use these quizzes?
Pick a topic they’re covering in class and play a quiz once or twice a week. Encourage sensible guesses – instant feedback explains answers so learning sticks.
Are the quizzes matched to the KS1 National Curriculum?
Yes. Topics, language and difficulty suit ages 5–7 and reflect what children study in Years 1 and 2. They’re ideal for revision, consolidation and practice at home.
What if a quiz feels too hard?
Start with a familiar area, then build to new skills. Retaking a quiz boosts recall, and picture-led items help reinforce understanding before moving on.
